Concurent Sessions
Surprise! Surprise! Surprise! Keith McCandless, Oblique Strategy
In this lively session, we will explore how to nimbly “manage”
surprise – the unexpected events that may present a difficult challenge
or a fabulous opportunity. In contrast to the
“big-brains-should-have-anticipated-it-in-advance-school,” we will
examine how complex systems invariably generate the unexpected and how
leaders can responsibly be “in charge but not in control.” Each
participant will assess their readiness for managing the unexpected
based on insights from “high reliability organizations.”
Choosing to Adapt: What Does it Take and Why It's Important
Linda Nageotte, Food Lifeline; Liz Vivian, Seattle Youth Involvement Network
Session notes
Risk Taking and Leadership Greg Vigdor, Washington Health
Foundation; Anson Laytner, Multifaith Works

environment. Examine types of risk taking, correlations to stage of
development, bringing others along, and where you yourself stand as risk
taker or risk aversive.
